Biography | The Real Story
As the founder of GroundFloor Media (GFM), Laura Love-Aden provides vision and leadership for the Denver-based public relations agency she founded in 2001. In the past ten years, Laura has taken a business she started in her basement in Boulder, Colo., and built it into one of the region’s fastest growers, boasting a national client base that has included Coors Light, Starbucks Coffee Company, Qdoba Mexican Grill, the Special Olympics U.S.A. National Games, Children's Hospital Colorado, Corporate Express and BNSF Railway.
The agency is an award-winning public relations firm and one of the fastest-growing companies in Colorado. GFM was named the Best Boutique Agency to Work For in the nation by The Holmes Report, an influential public relations industry newsletter, and was recognized by the Denver Business Journal as one of the top small companies on the Best Places to Work list for the past six years. The agency was also recognized by the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce as the number two top Small Businesses of the Year.
Love-Aden was named by Mayor John Hickenlooper to the Denver 150, an honor that recognized 150 unsung heroes for their contributions to the Denver community. Laura was also named a finalist for the Denver Business Journal’s 2006 and 2007 Outstanding Women in Business awards, an accolade that recognizes women in Denver for their significant contributions to their industry and their community. She was also recognized as one of the “Forty under 40” by the Denver Business Journal. On an international level, Laura was honored with the Kauffman Community Award for her personal and corporate commitment to the Tennyson Center for Children, an award honoring outstanding individual entrepreneurs who have made a significant difference in their local communities.
Laura understands the importance of community involvement and is committed both personally and professionally to helping whenever possible. Since she started the agency, Laura has dedicated at least 10 percent of GFM’s work to nonprofit clients and pro-bono accounts. Additionally, Laura and her team members are committed to various non-profit organizations throughout the country. She is Past President of the Colorado chapter of the Entrepreneur’s Organization (EO) and serves on the board of Downtown Denver, Inc., Jeremy Bloom's Wish of a Lifetime Foundation and Tennyson Center for Children. She is also an active member of Washington Park United Methodist Church.
Drawing from a background in journalism and extensive experience in media relations, Laura earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University. In her spare time, she continues to learn a few things from her growing family that now includes a nine-year-old daughter, a son who arrived ‘special delivery’ from Russia, and a new baby brother who appeared on the scene this past summer. She dreams about running (or actually finishing) half marathons again, tries to break away to the mountains, and travels internationally whenever she can.
Biography | The Real Story
“Love”able Leader
The idea for GroundFloor Media actually came to Laura Love-Aden at a bagel shop while enjoying a large diet coke. She quickly scribbled out an outline for the business on a napkin, and, as they say, the rest is history.
Well, to be honest, the rest of history goes something like this: an Oklahoma City family spent one 1970s Christmas bringing their new bundle of “Love” home from the hospital – in a bright red stocking. Somehow this only made Laura more driven. Perhaps she didn’t want to spend her entire life dressed in a sock. So when her first job offer after grad school came – a TV-weather-girl gig to be named “Love in the Morning” – she politely told them to “sock it” and took a job managing events for an agency that worked with the White House. These days, she’s still an amazing organizer who isn’t afraid to pitch in and help her team.
Laura loves spending time with her husband, daughter, two new sons and their Bernese Mountain Dog, catching up with old friends across the globe, laughing at herself, traveling and meditating. All made a bit more palatable with a fresh hot cup of coffee after an even hotter game of Ms. Pac Man. She de-stresses with training runs at the Highline canal, a weekend getaway at their home in the mountains, a glass of white wine and laughing about the drama that consumes 4th grade girls with new boyfriends each day… hopefully in that order. She also enjoys yoga, hiking, hitting the tables in Vegas, racking up frequent flier miles, staying out of lawsuits and running half marathons. As if she’s not busy enough with all that, she is active in the Colorado chapter of Entrepreneur’s Organization, volunteers at her church and with the Tennyson Center for Children, and sits on numerous other boards. Impressed? Well be sure you look her in the eye when you say so. Nothing makes her more suspicious than someone who won’t.
